For seven years, Grissom JROTC cadets have hosted a 5K race to support wounded service members. With the help of our sponsors, we have donated over $35,000 in support of this effort. That is a tremendous accomplishment and speaks to the cooperation and patriotism that characterizes our communities. The Grissom High School JROTC Corps of Cadets will host the Grissom JROTC Warrior 5K Run on April 1st, 2017; we ask that you include our race in your budget considerations for community support.
This year, our race will raise funds to support the Semper Fi Community Task Force, an organization designed to improve the life of veterans who are trying to adapt to civilian lifestyle. Donated funds can be used to specifically support the efforts of our veterans or wounded members by using those funds to help them attend athletic camps, join social gatherings of other veterans to help keep the brotherhood, or insuring they have the means and equipment needed to meet their athletic goals, despite any limitations they are working to overcome.
The Grissom JROTC program is also supported through this race. The mission of the Grissom JROTC program is to motivate young people to become better citizens. This happens through co-curricular and leadership opportunities that include nationally ranked Military Skills Teams, our Color Guard, and Drill Team. We are among the largest JROTC programs in northern Alabama. In addition to supporting our local veterans, we often serve the local community through projects such as the Special Olympics, Relay for Life, and the Veterans’ Day Parade.
This is a unique, exciting and very patriotic race. Redstone Arsenal’s PEO-Aviation has supported the community with static military displays. Patriot Guard and Semper Fi motorcycles have inspired both runners and spectators with their oversized American Flags lining the racecourse. The colorful Vets with Vettes have provided their patriotic flair along the racecourse, as have the military formations that run the race. Helicopter displays have attracted both kids and adults of all ages. We expect over 1,000 racers this year, with multiple teams participating in the ROTC/JROTC and Corporate/Community Divisions.
We hope you will take a moment to review the great impact these two organizations have had on our local and military communities. If you are a past sponsor, we would appreciate your continued support. If you have not supported our race previously, please join with us as we honor and assist our local veterans.
