The Grissom Army JROTC program is one of the largest in the Tennessee Valley, with over 200 Cadets enrolled, with plans to grow even more. With growth, comes more opportunities for us to reach students that can benefit from what our program has to offer.

Cadets planned, coordinated and executed our annual Warrior 5K run, which was designed to raise money for local veteran organizations and provide Cadets the opportunity to volunteer and give back to their community.

Raider team is a team that tests cadets’ physical and mental strength. The training the team does is 10+ miles a week, plus training with the obstacle course, Cross Country Rescue and Rope Bridge.  Just a few short years ago, we were first in the Nation, finished second in 2015, and tied for second in 2016. We consistently finish in high placements each year at Raider Nationals, where 20+ States, representing over 80 teams, come to compete. The most significant individual accomplishment was by Senior Emily Myers, who competed in, and won, the Ultimate Raider competition which tests the Cadets’ stamina, endurance, and mental & physical toughness over a two mile course while negotiating multiple obstacles, all while caring a 35 pound pack. This made her the top female in the nation.

We also have a nationally recognized CyberPatriot Team, who finds cyber security issues and fixes them for points. Once the simulated computer has no weaknesses, that image is complete. We train with Windows, Linux and packet tracer. Our 2016-2017 team finished first in the region and the only Army JROTC program in the state that qualified to attend the National Competition in Baltimore, Maryland. For the last two years, we’ve been the top Army JROTC CyberPatriot Team in the state of Alabama.

Our Drill team competes in drill sequences that test the cadets’ discipline and marching skills. They test these traits by giving the team sequences of commands to train with, then testing if they can complete the sequence during the competition by having graders there to watch them drill. Even the slightest misstep and they will receive a lower score. This means our drill team must practice every day so they can look sharp when competition time rolls around!
